The word ‘essay’ means an ‘attempt’. An essay is a prose composition on a particular subject. In an essay we express our thoughts on a given topic in an organised manner.

Essays are of different types. Some of them are as follows.

Descriptive Essays: In these you have a de­scription of a place, person or a thil”g. Eg : A Museum, The Elephant.

Narrative Essays: In these an incident, a jour­ney, a story etc are related. Eg : An unusual jour­ney, A Picnic.

Reflective Essays: These express the writer’s thoughts on themes like qualities, social themes, philosophical or religious topics etc., Eg : Pa­tience, love, Education, Democracy etc.,

Imaginative Essays: These deal with imaginary situations.

Eg : If I were the Prime Minister.
